Les rues étaient encore désertes. The streets were still deserted. Il alla jusqu’à la maison des Stcherbatzkï, les grandes portes étaient encore fermées, tout le monde dormait. Levin walked to the Shcherbatskys' house. The principal entrance was still closed, and every one was asleep.
Il revint à l’hôtel, alla de nouveau dans sa chambre et demanda du café. He returned to the hotel, went to his room, and asked for coffee. Le valet qui le lui apporta n’était pas Egor. The day watchman, and not Yegor, brought it to him. Lévine voulut lier conversation avec lui mais on le sonna et il dut s’en aller. Levin wished to enter into conversation with him; but some one rang for him, and he went out.

Il n’avait pas mangé de toute la journée précédente, avait passé deux nuits sans dormir, de plus il était resté quelques heures déshabillé, au froid, et malgré cela il se sentait tout à fait fort et dispos. Levin had passed the whole night and the morning completely oblivious of the material conditions of existence: he had neither eaten nor slept; had been exposed, with almost no clothing, to the cold for several hours; and he not only was fresh and hearty, but he was unconscious of his body; he moved without using his muscles, and felt capable of doing anything.
