Presque deux mois s’étaient écoulés. On était au milieu de l’été, il faisait très chaud, et Serge Ivanovitch s’était enfin décidé à quitter Moscou. Almost two months had passed by, half the hot summer was gone, but Sergyeï Ivanovitch had only just made up his mind to leave Moscow. Des événements avaient, ce temps-là, traversé sa vie. An important event for him had just occurred. Depuis un an, il avait terminé son livre Essais sur les bases et les formes des Constitutions en Europe et en Russie, fruit d’un travail de six années. The year before he had finished his book, entitled, "An Essay on the Principles and the Forms of Government in Europe and in Russia," the fruit of six years of labor. Quelques chapitres de cet ouvrage et l’introduction avaient paru dans des périodiques ; d’autres fragments avaient été lus par Serge Ivanovitch à diverses personnes de son milieu, de sorte que les idées de cette œuvre n’étaient plus d’une nouveauté absolue pour le public. Cependant, Serge Ivanovitch avait pensé que l’apparition de son livre aurait un certain retentissement dans la société, et, qu’en tout cas, il en serait fort parlé dans les milieux savants. The introduction, as well as some fragments from the book, had already appeared in the reviews, and certain parts had been read by the author to the people of his circle, so that the ideas contained in this treatise could not be a perfect novelty for the public; but nevertheless Sergyeï Ivanovitch expected that the book on its appearance would attract serious attention, and produce, if not a revolution in science, at least a powerful sensation in the learned world.

Sans demander à personne son avis sur ce livre, répondant peu volontiers et feignant l’indifférence aux questions de ses amis qui s’informaient de son succès, ne s’informant même pas chez les libraires de la vente, Serge Ivanovitch, cependant, surveillait avec une grande attention l’impression que produirait son livre dans la société et les milieux intellectuels. Though Sergyeï Ivanovitch answered reluctantly and with pretended indifference the questions of his friends who asked how the book was going, and though he refrained from inquiring of the booksellers how it was selling, nevertheless he followed eagerly and with strained attention every sign of the impression which his book was producing on society and literature.
