He no longer thought of the harm that the shower might do the race-course, but he was full of joy as he remembered that, thanks to the rain, she would be alone; for he knew that Alekseï Aleksandrovitch, who had just got back from a visit to the baths, would not have driven out from Petersburg.
Espérant la trouver seule, Vronskï, comme il le faisait toujours pour ne pas attirer l’attention, descendit de voiture avant le pont et alla à pied. Hoping to find her alone, Vronsky stopped his horses, as he always did, at some little distance from the house, in order to attract as little attention as possible, and, not driving across the little bridge, got out and went to the house on foot. Il n’entra pas par le perron de la rue, mais par la cour. He did not go to the front entrance, but went through the court.
« Le barine est-il venu ? » "Has the barin come?" demanda-t-il au jardinier. he asked of a gardener.
