Depuis plus de dix ans, madame Stahl vivait à l’étranger, dans le Midi, ne quittant pas le lit. For more than ten years Madame Stahl lived abroad, in the South, never leaving her bed. Les uns disaient qu’elle se posait en femme vertueuse et très pieuse, d’autres soutenaient qu’elle était dans l’âme une noble créature ne vivant, comme elle l’affichait, que pour le bien de son prochain. Some said that she was a woman who had made a public show of her piety and good works; others said that she was at heart the most highly moral of women, and that she lived only for the good of her neighbor, that she was really what she pretended to be.
Personne ne savait à quelle religion elle appartenait : était-elle protestante, catholique, orthodoxe, on l’ignorait, une seule chose était indiscutable, elle était en relations d’amitié avec de hauts personnages de diverses confessions. No one knew whether she was Catholic, Protestant, or orthodox; one thing alone was certain,—that she had friendly relations with the high dignitaries of all the churches and of all communions.
