Der neugierige Kakambo legte dem Wirt so viel Fragen vor, daß ihm dieser keine Auskunft mehr geben konnte. Cacambo vented all his curiosity upon the landlord by a thousand different questions.
Dum bin ich nun herzlich, aber es schad’t mir nichts, sagte der Wirt. Wissen Sie was, wir haben ’nen alten Herrn hier, vor diesem war er bei Hofe; ’nen hochgestudiertern Mann giebt’s im ganzen Lande nicht. The honest man answered him thus: “I am very ignorant, Sir, but I am contented with my ignorance; however, we have in this neighbourhood an old man retired from court, who is the most learned and communicative person in the whole kingdom.”
Sogleich führte er Kakambo’n zu dem Alten. Kandide, der jezt die zweite Rolle spielen musste, begleitete seinen Bedienten. He then directed Cacambo to the old man; Candide acted now only a second character, and attended his servant. Das Haus des Gelehrten sah ganz schlecht und recht aus. Die Thür bestand aus kahlem Silber, die Vertäflung der Zimmer aus lumpichtem Golde, war aber so geschmakvoll gearbeitet, daß sie von der reichsten Vertäflung nicht verdunkelt wurde. They entered a quite plain house, for the door was nothing but silver, and the ceiling was only of beaten gold, but wrought in so elegant a taste as to vie with the richest. Das Vorzimmer war freilich nur mit Rubinen und Smaragden ausgelegt; allein alles daselbst, so schiklich geordnet, daß man diese bäurische Einfalt bald darüber vergas. The antechamber, indeed, was only incrusted with rubies and emeralds; but the order in which everything was disposed made amends for this great simplicity.
