Le vieux savant, qui s’appelait Martin, s’embarqua donc pour Bordeaux avec Candide. The old scholar, whose name was Martin, took shipping with Candide for Bordeaux. L’un et l’autre avaient beaucoup vu et beaucoup souffert ; et quand le vaisseau aurait dû faire voile de Surinam au Japon par le cap de Bonne-Espérance, ils auraient eu de quoi s’entretenir du mal moral et du mal physique pendant tout le voyage. They both had seen and suffered a great deal; and if the ship had been destined to sail from Surinam to Japan round the Cape of Good Hope, they could have found sufficient entertainment for each other during the whole voyage in discoursing upon moral and natural evil.
Cependant Candide avait un grand avantage sur Martin, c’est qu’il espérait toujours revoir Mlle Cunégonde, et que Martin n’avait rien à espérer ; de plus il avait de l’or et des diamants ; et, quoiqu’il eût perdu cent gros moutons rouges chargés des plus grands trésors de la terre, quoiqu’il eût toujours sur le cœur la friponnerie du patron hollandais ; cependant, quand il songeait à ce qui lui restait dans ses poches, et quand il parlait de Cunégonde, surtout à la fin du repas, il penchait alors pour le système de Pangloss. Candide, however, had one advantage over Martin: he lived in the pleasing hopes of seeing Miss Cunegund once more; whereas the poor philosopher had nothing to hope for. Besides, Candide had money and jewels, and, notwithstanding he had lost a hundred red sheep, laden with the greatest treasure on the earth, and though he still smarted from the reflection of the Dutch skipper’s knavery, yet when he considered what he had still left, and repeated the name of Cunegund, especially after meal-times, he inclined to Pangloss’s doctrine.
