Chez Rasseneur, après avoir mangé une soupe, Étienne, remonté dans l’étroite chambre qu’il allait occuper sous le toit, en face du Voreux, était tombé sur son lit, tout vêtu, assommé de fatigue. AT RASSENEUR'S, after having eaten his soup, Étienne went back into the small chamber beneath the roof and facing the Voreux, which he was to occupy, and fell on to his bed dressed as he was, overcome with fatigue. En deux jours, il n’avait pas dormi quatre heures. For two days he had only slept four hours. Quand il s’éveilla, au crépuscule, il resta étourdi un instant, sans reconnaître le lieu où il se trouvait ; et il éprouvait un tel malaise, une telle pesanteur de tête, qu’il se mit péniblement debout, avec l’idée de prendre l’air, avant de dîner et de se coucher pour la nuit. When he awoke in the twilight he was dazed for a moment, not recognising his surroundings; and he felt such uneasiness and his head was so heavy that he rose, painfully, with the idea of getting some fresh air before having his dinner and going to bed for the night.
Dehors, le temps était de plus en plus doux, le ciel de suie se cuivrait, chargé d’une de ces longues pluies du Nord, dont on sentait l’approche dans la tiédeur humide de l’air. La nuit venait par grandes fumées, noyant les lointains perdus de la plaine. Outside, the weather was becoming milder: the sooty sky was growing copper-coloured, laden with one of those warm rains of the Nord, the approach of which one feels by the moist warmth of the air, and the night was coming on in great mists which drowned the distant landscape of the plain. Sur cette mer immense de terres rougeâtres, le ciel bas semblait se fondre en noire poussière, sans un souffle de vent à cette heure, qui animât les ténèbres. Over this immense sea of reddish earth the low sky seemed to melt into black dust, without a breath of wind now to animate the darkness. C’était d’une tristesse blafarde et morte d’ensevelissement. It was the wan and deathly melancholy of a funeral.
Étienne marcha devant lui, au hasard, n’ayant d’autre but que de secouer sa fièvre. Étienne walked straight ahead at random, with no other aim but to shake off his fever. Lorsqu’il passa devant le Voreux, assombri déjà au fond de son trou, et dont pas une lanterne ne luisait encore, il s’arrêta un moment, pour voir la sortie des ouvriers à la journée. When he passed before the Voreux, already growing gloomy at the bottom of its hole and with no lantern yet shining from it, he stopped a moment to watch the departure of the day-workers. Sans doute six heures sonnaient, des moulineurs, des chargeurs à l’accrochage, des palefreniers s’en allaient par bandes, mêlés aux filles du criblage, vagues et rieuses dans l’ombre. No doubt six o'clock had struck; landers, porters from the pit-eye, and grooms were going away in bands, mixed with the vague and laughing figures of the screening girls in the shade.
D’abord, ce furent la Brûlé et son gendre Pierron. At first it was Brûlé and her son-in-law, Pierron. Elle le querellait, parce qu’il ne l’avait pas soutenue, dans une contestation avec un surveillant, pour son compte de pierres. She was abusing him because he had not supported her in a quarrel with an overseer over her reckoning of stones.
