In the livid sky a full moon could be faintly seen behind great clouds, black rags driven furiously by a tempestuous wind far above; and on the earth no breath was stirring, nothing could be heard but drippings from the roofs, the falling of white lumps with a soft thud.
Étienne, embarrassé de cette femme qu’on lui donnait, ne trouvait rien à dire, dans son malaise. Mais un accès de timidité singulière l’interrompit. But a curious spasm of timidity interrupted him. Leur passé lui revenait, leurs gros désirs d’autrefois, et les délicatesses, et les hontes qui les avaient empêchés d’aller ensemble. The past came back to him, their old longings for each other, and the delicacies and the shames which had prevented them from coming together.
