Le jour arriva enfin. The daylight came. Je me levai à l’aurore. I rose at dawn. Pendant une heure ou deux je m’occupai à ranger mes tiroirs, ma garde-robe et tout ce que contenait ma chambre, afin de les laisser dans l’état qu’exigeait une courte absence. I busied myself for an hour or two with arranging my things in my chamber, drawers and wardrobe, in the order wherein I should wish to leave them during a brief absence. Pendant ce temps, j’entendis Saint-John quitter sa chambre. Meantime, I heard St. John quit his room. Je craignais qu’il ne frappât ; mais non : il se contenta de glisser une feuille de papier sous ma porte. He stopped at my door: I feared he would knock—no, but a slip of paper was passed under the door. Je la pris. I took it up. Je la pris et je lus ces mots : It bore these words:—
« Vous m’avez quitté trop subitement hier au soir. "You left me too suddenly last night. Si seulement vous étiez restée un peu plus de temps, vous auriez posé votre main sur la croix du chrétien, sur la couronne des anges. Had you stayed but a little longer, you would have laid your hand on the Christian's cross and the angel's crown. Je reviendrai dans quinze jours, et alors je m’attends à vous trouver tout à fait décidée. I shall expect your clear decision when I return this day fortnight. Pendant ce temps, priez et veillez, afin de n’être pas tentée ; je crois que l’esprit a bonne volonté, mais la chair est faible. Meantime, watch and pray that you enter not into temptation: the spirit, I trust, is willing, but the flesh, I see, is weak. Je prierai pour vous à toute heure. I shall pray for you hourly.—Yours, St. Jean. John."
« Mon esprit, me dis-je, veut faire ce qui est bien, et j’espère que ma chair est assez forte pour accomplir la volonté du ciel, lorsque cette volonté me sera clairement démontrée. "My spirit," I answered mentally, "is willing to do what is right; and my flesh, I hope, is strong enough to accomplish the will of Heaven, when once that will is distinctly known to me. En tous cas, elle sera assez forte pour chercher, sortir des nuages et du doute, et trouver la lumière et la certitude. At any rate, it shall be strong enough to search—inquire—to grope an outlet from this cloud of doubt, and find the open day of certainty."
Bien qu’on fût au 1er du mois de juin, la matinée était froide et sombre, la pluie fouettait les vitres. It was the first of June; yet the morning was overcast and chilly: rain beat fast on my casement. J’entendis Saint-John ouvrir la porte de devant, et, regardant à travers la fenêtre, je le vis traverser le jardin ; il prit un chemin au-dessus des marais brumeux, et qui allait dans la direction de Whitecross. I heard the front-door open, and St. John pass out. Looking through the window, I saw him traverse the garden. He took the way over the misty moors in the direction of Whitcross—there he would meet the coach.
