Quand je revins à la vie, mon visage était mouillé, mais mouillé de larmes. When I returned to partial life my face was wet with tears. Combien dura cet état d’insensibilité, je ne saurais le dire. How long that state of insensibility had lasted I cannot say. Je n’avais plus aucun moyen de me rendre compte du temps. I had no means now of taking account of time. Jamais solitude ne fut semblable à la mienne, jamais abandon si complet ! Never was solitude equal to this, never had any living being been so utterly forsaken. I drove away every idea, and, conquered by my grief, I rolled myself to the foot of the opposite wall. Already I was feeling the approach of another faint, and was hoping for complete annihilation, when a loud noise reached me. Was it the fall of some mighty pillar of the globe? J’écoutai encore. I listened still. Je voulus savoir si ce bruit se renouvellerait. I wanted to know if the noise would be repeated. Un quart d’heure se passa. A quarter of an hour passed away. Le silence régnait dans la galerie. Silence reigned in this gallery. Je n’entendais même plus les battements de mon cœur. I could not hear even the beating of my heart. Tout à coup mon oreille, appliquée par hasard sur la muraille, crut surprendre des paroles vagues, insaisissables, lointaines. Suddenly my ear, resting by chance against the wall, caught, or seemed to catch, certain vague, indescribable, distant, articulate sounds, as of words. « C’est une hallucination ! » pensai-je. "This is a delusion," I thought. Mais il n'en fut rien. But it was not. En écoutant avec plus d’attention, j’entendis réellement un murmure de voix. Listening more attentively, I heard in reality a murmuring of voices. Mais de comprendre ce qui se disait, c’est ce que ma faiblesse ne me permit pas. But my weakness prevented me from understanding what the voices said. Cependant on parlait. J’en étais certain. Yet it was language, I was sure of it. J’eus un instant la crainte que ces paroles ne fussent les miennes, rapportées par un écho. For a moment I feared the words might be my own, brought back by the echo. Peut-être avais-je crié à mon insu. Perhaps I had been crying out unknown to myself. Je fermai fortement les lèvres et j’appliquai de nouveau mon oreille à la paroi. I closed my lips firmly, and laid my ear against the wall again. « Oui, certes, on parle ! "Yes, truly, some one is speaking; those are words!" En me portant même à quelques pieds plus loin le long de la muraille, j’entendis distinctement. Even a few feet from the wall I could hear distinctly. J'ai crié de toutes mes forces. I cried with all my might. Au secours ! "Help!" J’écoutai, j’épiai dans l’ombre une réponse, un cri, un soupir. I listened, I watched in the darkness for an answer, a cry, a mere breath of sound, but nothing came. Quelques minutes se passèrent. Some minutes passed. Tout un monde d’idées avait éclos dans mon esprit. A whole world of ideas had opened in my mind. Je pensai que ma voix affaiblie ne pouvait arriver jusqu’à mes compagnons. I thought that my weakened voice could never penetrate to my companions. « Car ce sont eux, répétai-je. "It is they," I repeated. Quels autres hommes seraient enfouis à trente lieues sous terre ? "What other men can be thirty leagues under ground?" Je me remis à écouter. I again began to listen. En promenant mon oreille sur la paroi, je trouvai un point mathématique où les voix paraissaient atteindre leur maximum d’intensité. Passing my ear over the wall from one place to another, I found the point where the voices seemed to be best heard. I listened again, and this time, yes this time, I did distinctly hear my name pronounced across the wide interval. C’était mon oncle qui le prononçait ! It was my uncle's own voice! Il causait avec le guide, et le mot « forlorad » était un mot danois ! He was talking to the guide. And forlorad is a Danish word. Alors je compris tout. Then I understood it all. Pour me faire entendre, il fallait précisément parler le long de cette muraille qui servirait à conduire ma voix comme le fil conduit l’électricité. To make myself heard, I must speak along this wall, which would conduct the sound of my voice just as wire conducts electricity. Mais je n’avais pas de temps à perdre. But there was no time to lose. This wonderful underground conversation, carried on with a distance of four miles and a quarter between us, concluded with these words of hope. Je fis une prière de reconnaissance à Dieu, car il m’avait conduit parmi ces immensités sombres au seul point peut-être où la voix de mes compagnons pouvait me parvenir. I thanked God from my heart, for it was He who had conducted me through those vast solitudes to the point where, alone of all others perhaps, the voices of my companions could have reached me. This acoustic effect is easily explained on scientific grounds. It arose from the concave form of the gallery and the conducting power of the rock. Il y a bien des exemples de cette propagation de sons non perceptibles aux espaces intermédiaires. There are many examples of this propagation of sounds which remain unheard in the intermediate space. Je me souviens qu’en maint endroit ce phénomène fut observé, entre autres, dans la galerie intérieure du dôme de Saint-Paul à Londres, et surtout au milieu de ces curieuses cavernes de Sicile, ces latomies situées près de Syracuse, dont la plus merveilleuse en ce genre est connue sous le nom d’Oreille de Denys. I remember that a similar phenomenon has been observed in many places; amongst others on the internal surface of the gallery of the dome of St. Paul's in London, and especially in the midst of the curious caverns among the quarries near Syracuse, the most wonderful of which is called Dionysius' Ear. These remembrances came into my mind, and I clearly saw that since my uncle's voice really reached me, there could be no obstacle between us.
