The reader has not, perhaps, forgotten that one moment before catching sight of the nocturnal band of vagabonds, Quasimodo, as he inspected Paris from the heights of his bell tower, perceived only one light burning, which gleamed like a star from a window on the topmost story of a lofty edifice beside the Porte Saint-Antoine. Cet édifice, c’était la Bastille. This edifice was the Bastille. Cette étoile, c’était la chandelle de Louis XI. That star was the candle of Louis XI.
Le roi Louis XI était en effet à Paris depuis deux jours. had, in fact, been two days in Paris. Il devait repartir le surlendemain pour sa citadelle de Montilz-lès-Tours. He was to take his departure on the next day but one for his citadel of Montilz-les-Tours. Il ne faisait jamais que de rares et courtes apparitions dans sa bonne ville de Paris, n’y sentant pas autour de lui assez de trappes, de gibets et d’archers écossais. He made but seldom and brief appearance in his good city of Paris, since there he did not feel about him enough pitfalls, gibbets, and Scotch archers.
Il était venu, ce jour-là, coucher à la Bastille. He had come, that day, to sleep at the Bastille. La grande chambre de cinq toises carrées qu’il avait au Louvre, avec sa grande cheminée chargée de douze grosses bêtes et des treize grands prophètes, et son grand lit de onze pieds sur douze, lui agréaient peu. The great chamber five toises square, which he had at the Louvre, with its huge chimney-piece loaded with twelve great beasts and thirteen great prophets, and his grand bed, eleven feet by twelve, pleased him but little. This good bourgeois king preferred the Bastille with a tiny chamber and couch. Et puis la Bastille était plus forte que le Louvre. And then, the Bastille was stronger than the Louvre.
Cette petite chambre, que le roi s'était réservée dans la célèbre prison d'État, était aussi passablement spacieuse et occupait l'étage supérieur d'une tourelle s'élevant du donjon. This little chamber, which the king reserved for himself in the famous state prison, was also tolerably spacious and occupied the topmost story of a turret rising from the donjon keep. Elle était de forme circulaire, couverte de nattes de paille brillante, voûtée de poutres, enrichie de fleurs de lis de métal doré avec des entretoises en couleur ; lambrissée de bois précieux semés de rosaces de métal blanc, et d'autres peintes en fin vert brillant, faites d'orpiment et de fin indigo. It was circular in form, carpeted with mats of shining straw, ceiled with beams, enriched with fleurs-de-lis of gilded metal with interjoists in color; wainscoated with rich woods sown with rosettes of white metal, and with others painted a tine, bright green, made of orpiment and fine indigo.
