Figuratevi l'allegrezza di Pinocchio, quando si sentì libero. You can imagine Pinocchio's joy when he found himself free. Senza fermarsi un momento a prender fiato, lasciò subito la città e prese la strada che conduceva alla casa della Fata. Without stopping to take breath he immediately left the town and took the road that led to the Fairy's house.
A motivo del tempo piovigginoso, la strada era diventata tutta un pantano e ci si andava fino a mezza gamba. On account of the rainy weather the road had become a marsh into which he sank knee-deep. Ma il burattino non si volle dar per vinto. But the puppet would not give in. Tormentato dalla passione di rivedere il suo babbo e la sua sorellina dai capelli turchini, correva a salti come un can levriero, e nel correre le pillacchere gli schizzavano fin sopra il berretto. Tormented by the desire of seeing his father and his little sister with blue hair again he ran and leapt like a greyhound, and as he ran he was splashed with mud from head to foot. — Quante disgrazie mi sono accadute.... And he said to himself as he went along: 'How many misfortunes have happened to me . e me le meritavo! and I deserved them! perchè sono un burattino testardo e piccoso. for I am an obstinate, passionate puppet. perchè io sono un burattino testardo e piccoso..., e voglio far sempre tutte le cose a modo mio, senza dar retta a quelli che mi voglion bene e che hanno mille volte più giudizio di me!… Ma da questa volta in là, faccio proponimento di cambiar vita e di diventare un ragazzo ammodo e ubbidiente… Tanto ormai ho bell'e visto che i ragazzi, a essere disubbidienti, ci scapitano sempre e non ne infilano mai una per il su' verso. I am always bent upon having my own way, without listening to those who wish me well, and who have a thousand times more sense than I have! Ma da questo momento in poi sono determinato a cambiar vita e a diventare ordinato e obbediente. But from this time forth I am determined to change and to become orderly and obedient. Tant'è vero che ho bell'e capito che i ragazzi disubbidienti non ne cavan mai nulla di buono. For at last I have seen that disobedient boys come to no good and gain nothing. E il mio babbo mi avrà aspettato?… Ce lo troverò a casa della Fata? And will my papa have waited for me? Lo troverò a casa della Fata! Shall I find him at the Fairy's house! Poveretto, è tanto tempo che non lo vedo: mi muoio dalla voglia di abbracciarlo e di coprirlo di baci! Poor man, it is so long since I last saw him: I am dying to embrace him, and to cover him with kisses! E la Fata mi perdonerà la brutta azione che le ho fatto?… E pensare che ho ricevuto da lei tante attenzioni e tante cure amorose… e pensare che se oggi son sempre vivo, lo debbo a lei! And will the Fairy forgive me my bad conduct to her? E pensare a tanta bontà e a tante cure amorose che ho ricevuto da lei!… To think of all the kindness and loving care I received from her . pensare che se sono vivo adesso lo devo a lei! to think that if I am now alive I owe it to her! Ma si può dare un ragazzo più ingrato e più senza cuore di me?… Would it be possible to find a more ungrateful boy, or one with less heart than I have!
Nel tempo che diceva così, si fermò tutt'a un tratto spaventato e fece quattro passi indietro. Whilst he was saying this he stopped suddenly, frightened to death, and made four steps backwards.
