In sulle prime, la buona donnina cominciò col dire che lei non era la piccola Fata dai capelli turchini: ma poi, vedendosi oramai scoperta e non volendo mandare più in lungo la commedia, fini per farsi riconoscere, e disse a Pinocchio: At first the good little woman maintained that she was not the little Fairy with blue hair; but seeing that she was found out, and not wishing to continue the comedy any longer, she ended by making herself known, and she said to Pinocchio:
Piccolo birichino! 'You little rogue! E come mai ti sei accorto che ero io? how did you ever discover who I was?'
Era il mio grande affetto per te che me l'ha detto. 'It was my great affection for you that told me.'
Ti ricordi? 'Do you remember? Mi lasciasti bambina e ora mi ritrovi donna; tanto donna, che potrei quasi farti da mamma. You left me a child, and now that you have found me again I am a woman—a woman almost old enough to be your mamma.'
