Vedendo che la porta non si apriva, l'omino la spalancò con un violentissimo calcio: ed entrato nella stanza, disse col suo solito risolino a Pinocchio e a Lucignolo: Finding that the door remained shut the little man burst it open with a violent kick, and coming into the room he said to Pinocchio and Candlewick with his usual little laugh:
Bravissimi, ragazzi! 'Well done, boys! Avete ragliato bene; io vi ho subito riconosciuti alla voce, e per questo eccomi qui. You brayed well, and I recognised you by your voices. Ecco perchè son qui. That is why I am here.'
A tali parole i due ciuchini rimasero mogi mogi, colla testa giù, con gli orecchi bassi e con la coda fra le gambe. At these words the two little donkeys were quite stupefied, and stood with their heads down, their ears lowered, and their tails between their legs.
Da principio l'omino li lisciò, li accarezzò, li palpeggiò: poi, tirata fuori la striglia, cominciò a strigliarli per bene. At first the little man stroked and caressed them; then taking out a currycomb he currycombed them well. E quando, a furia di strigliarli, li ebbe lustrati che parevano due specchi, allora, messa loro la cavezza, li condusse sul mercato, colla speranza di venderli e di tirarne un bel guadagno. And when by this process he had polished them till they shone like two mirrors, he put a halter round their necks and led them to the market-place, in hopes of selling them and making a good profit.
