Mentre Pinocchio nuotava velocemente verso la riva, si accorse che suo padre, il quale gli stava sulle spalle con le gambe nell'acqua, tremava violentemente come se il povero uomo fosse colto da un attacco di febbre intermittente. Whilst Pinocchio was swimming quickly towards the shore he discovered that his father, who was on his shoulders with his legs in the water, was trembling as violently as if the poor man had got an attack of ague fever.
Tremava dal freddo o dalla paura? Was he trembling from cold or from fear? Forse un po' dall'uno e dall'altro. Perhaps a little from both the one and the other. Ma Pinocchio, pensando che fosse dalla paura, disse per consolarlo: But Pinocchio, thinking that it was from fear, said to comfort him:
Coraggio, papà! 'Courage, papa! Fra pochi minuti saremo al sicuro sulla riva. In a few minutes we shall be safely on shore.'
Ma dov'è questa benedetta riva? 'But where is this blessed shore?' domandò il vecchietto, diventando ancora più spaventato, e socchiudendo gli occhi come fanno i sarti quando vogliono infilare un ago. asked the little old man, becoming still more frightened, and screwing up his eyes as tailors do when they wish to thread a needle. Sto cercando in ogni direzione e non vedo niente se non il cielo e il mare. 'I have been looking in every direction and I see nothing but the sky and the sea.'
