E, per dir la verità, anche noi, con questo manoscritto davanti, con una penna in mano, non avendo da contrastare che con le frasi, nè altro da temere che le critiche de' nostri lettori; anche noi, dico, sentiamo una certa ripugnanza a proseguire: troviamo un non so che di strano in questo mettere in campo, con così poca fatica, tanti bei precetti di fortezza e di carità, di premura operosa per gli altri, di sacrifizio illimitato di sè. It must be confessed that we ourselves, who have nothing to fear but the criticisms of our readers, feel a degree of repugnance in thus urging the unfashionable precepts of charity, courage, indefatigable solicitude for others, and unlimited sacrifice of self. Ma pensando che quelle cose erano dette da uno che poi le faceva, tiriamo avanti con coraggio. But the reflection that these things were said by a man who practised what he preached, encourages us to proceed in our relation.
"Voi non rispondete?" riprese il cardinale. "You do not answer," resumed the cardinal. "Ah, se aveste fatto, dalla parte vostra, ciò che la carità, ciò che il dovere richiedeva; in qualunque maniera poi le cose fossero andate, non vi mancherebbe ora una risposta. if you had followed the dictates of charity and duty, whatever had been the result, you would now have been at no loss for a reply. Vedete dunque voi stesso cosa avete fatto. Avete ubbidito all'iniquità, non curando ciò che il dovere vi prescriveva. Behold, then, what you have done; you having obeyed iniquity, regardless of the requirements of duty; you have obeyed her promptly; she had only to show herself to you, and signify her desire, and she found you ready at her call. L'avete ubbidita puntualmente: s'era fatta vedere a voi, per intimarvi il suo desiderio; ma voleva rimanere occulta a chi avrebbe potuto ripararsi da essa, e mettersi in guardia; non voleva che si facesse rumore, voleva il segreto, per maturare a suo bell'agio i suoi disegni d'insidie o di forza; vi comandò la trasgressione e il silenzio: voi avete trasgredito, e non parlavate. "They have told this also, the tattlers!" "L'han detto anche questi ciarlatani!" pensò don Abbondio; ma non dando segno di voler rispondere, il cardinale continuò,—"È vero dunque che avete detto a questi giovani delle falsità per tenerli nell'ignoranza e nelle tenebre?—Sono costretto allora a crederlo; non mi rimane che arrossire per voi, e sperare che piangherete con me. thought Don Abbondio, but as he gave no indication of addressing himself to speech, the cardinal pursued,—"Is it true, that you told these young people falsehoods to keep them in ignorance and darkness?—I am compelled, then, to believe it; it only remains for me to blush for you, and to hope that you will weep with me. Vedete a che v'ha condotto (Dio buono! Behold where it has led you, (merciful God! e l'avete presentata come una giustificazione! and you advanced it as a justification!) Vedete a che v'ha condotto questa sollecitudine della vostra vita! behold to what it has conducted you, this solicitude for your life! V'ha condotto... ribattete liberamente queste parole, se vi paiono ingiuste, prendetele in umiliazione salutare, se non lo sono... v'ha condotto a ingannare i deboli, a mentire ai vostri figliuoli. It has led you——(repel freely the assertion if it appear to you unjust: take it as a salutary humiliation if it is not) it has led you to deceive the feeble and unfortunate, to lie to your children!"
Così va il mondo! "This is the way of the world!" thought Don Abbondio again; "to this devil incarnate," (referring to the Unknown,) "his arms around his neck; and to me, for a half lie, reproaches without end! Ma voi siete nostri superiori; naturalmente avete ragione. But you are our superiors; of course you are right. È il mio pianeta, che tutti m'abbiano a dare addosso; anche i santi. It is my star, that all the world is against me, not excepting the saints. Proseguì ad alta voce,—"Ho fatto male! He continued aloud,—"I have done wrong! Ho sbagliato! Vedo che ho sbagliato. I see that I have done wrong. Ma che potevo io fare in una situazione così imbarazzante? But what could I do in so embarrassing a situation?"
