La beauté fraîche de la matinée suivante eut pour effet d'effacer de nos esprits l'impression sombre et grise que nous avait laissée notre première expérience de Baskerville Hall. THE fresh beauty of the following morning did something to efface from our minds the grim and grey impression which had been left upon both of us by our first experience of Baskerville Hall. Tandis que Sir Henry et moi prenions notre petit-déjeuner, la lumière du soleil inondait la pièce par les hautes fenêtres à meneaux, projetant des taches de couleur sur les blasons qui les couvraient. As Sir Henry and I sat at breakfast the sunlight flooded in through the high mullioned windows, throwing watery patches of colour from the coats-of-arms which covered them. The dark panelling glowed like bronze in the golden rays, and it was hard to realise that this was indeed the chamber which had struck such a gloom into our souls upon the evening before.
« Je crois que c'est nous-mêmes et non la maison que nous devons blâmer ! » dit le baronnet. “I guess it is ourselves and not the house that we have to blame!” said the baronet. « Nous étions fatigués par notre voyage et engourdis par notre trajet, c'est pourquoi nous avions une vision bien sombre du lieu. » “We were tired with our journey and chilled by our drive, so we took a grey view of the place. « Maintenant que nous sommes frais et dispos, tout nous paraît de nouveau gai et charmant. » Now we are fresh and well, so it is all cheerful once more.”
— Je ne suis pas de votre avis, répondis-je, en ce qui concerne le jeu de notre imagination. “And yet it was not entirely a question of imagination,” I answered. « Avez-vous entendu quelqu'un, une femme je crois, sanglotant pendant la nuit ? » “Did you, for example, happen to hear some one, a woman I think, sobbing in the night?”
— Oui, dans un demi-sommeil, il me semble bien avoir entendu ce bruit. “That is curious, for I did when I was half asleep fancy that I heard something of the sort. J'ai attendu longtemps, mais il n'y eut plus rien, aussi en ai-je conclu que c'était un rêve. I waited quite a time, but there was no more of it, so I concluded that it was all a dream.”
