Ce même matin s'était levé pour le prince chargé de pressentiments non moins douloureux,—fait que son état physique expliquait sans doute suffisamment ; mais il était d'une mélancolie si vague,—sa tristesse ne pouvait s'attacher à rien de particulier, et cela le tourmentait plus que toute autre chose. THIS same morning dawned for the prince pregnant with no less painful presentiments,—which fact his physical state was, of course, quite enough to account for; but he was so indefinably melancholy,—his sadness could not attach itself to anything in particular, and this tormented him more than anything else. Certes, certains faits se dressaient devant lui, clairs et douloureux, mais sa tristesse dépassait tout ce dont il pouvait se souvenir ou s'imaginer ; il sentait qu'il lui était impossible de se consoler seul. Of course certain facts stood before him, clear and painful, but his sadness went beyond all that he could remember or imagine; he realized that he was powerless to console himself unaided. Peu à peu il commença à concevoir l'attente que ce jour amènerait quelque chose d'important, de décisif. Little by little he began to develop the expectation that this day something important, something decisive, was to happen to him.
Sa crise d'hier avait été légère. His attack of yesterday had been a slight one. À part une légère pesanteur à la tête et des douleurs dans les membres, il ne ressentait aucun effet particulier. Excepting some little heaviness in the head and pain in the limbs, he did not feel any particular effects. Son cerveau fonctionnait bien, mais son âme était lourde en lui. His brain worked all right, though his soul was heavy within him.
Il se leva tard et, dès son réveil, se souvint de tout ce qui s'était passé la veille au soir ; il se rappela aussi, bien que moins distinctement, comment, une demi-heure après sa crise, on l'avait ramené chez lui. He rose late, and immediately upon waking remembered all about the previous evening; he also remembered, though not quite so clearly, how, half an hour after his fit, he had been carried home.
Il apprit bientôt qu'un messager des Épanchine était déjà venu prendre de ses nouvelles. He soon heard that a messenger from the Epanchins' had already been to inquire after him. À onze heures et demie, un autre messager arriva ; cela lui fit plaisir. At half-past eleven another arrived; and this pleased him.
