Pencroft's first care, after unloading the raft, was to render the cave habitable by stopping up all the holes which made it draughty. Sand, stones, twisted branches, wet clay, closed up the galleries open to the south winds. One narrow and winding opening at the side was kept, to lead out the smoke and to make the fire draw. Les Cheminées se trouvaient ainsi divisées en trois ou quatre chambres, si toutefois on peut donner ce nom à autant de tanières sombres, dont un fauve se fût à peine contenté. The cave was thus divided into three or four rooms, if such dark dens with which a donkey would scarcely have been contented deserved the name. Mais on y était au sec, et l’on pouvait s’y tenir debout, du moins dans la principale de ces chambres, qui occupait le centre. But they were dry, and there was space to stand upright, at least in the principal room, which occupied the center. Un sable fin en couvrait le sol, et, tout compte fait, on pouvait s’en arranger, en attendant mieux. The floor was covered with fine sand, and taking all in all they were well pleased with it for want of a better.
Tout en travaillant, Harbert et Pencroff causaient. « Peut-être, disait Harbert, nos compagnons auront-ils trouvé une meilleure installation que la nôtre ? "Perhaps," said Herbert, while he and Pencroft were working, "our companions have found a superior place to ours."
— C’est possible, répondait le marin, mais, dans le doute, ne t’abstiens pas ! "Very likely," replied the seaman; "but, as we don't know, we must work all the same. Mieux vaut une corde de trop à son arc que pas du tout de corde ! Better to have two strings to one's bow than no string at all!"
— Ah ! "Oh!" répétait Harbert, qu’ils ramènent M. Smith, qu’ils le retrouvent, et nous n’aurons plus qu’à remercier le ciel ! exclaimed Herbert, "how jolly it will be if they were to find Captain Harding and were to bring him back with them!"
