Babelotheca (“we”, “us”) provides a bilingual reading service. This policy explains what personal data we collect when you use the site, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the rights you have over your data.
1. What we collect
- Account data — when you sign up, our authentication provider Clerk stores your email address, a hashed password (or third-party identity token), and a user identifier. We see only what Clerk exposes to us.
- Subscription data — if you subscribe, our payment processor Lemon Squeezy handles your card details and billing address. We never see or store full card numbers. We do receive your subscription status, plan, and renewal date.
- Reading progress— for signed-in users, the last chapter you read in each book and language. For signed-out users, this stays in your browser’s local storage and never reaches our servers.
- Document uploads — files you submit through the translation tool are processed to produce a bilingual export and then deleted from object storage within 30 days.
- Contact form messages — name, email, and message content if you write to us through the contact form on the About page.
- Server logs — IP address, user-agent, and request paths, kept for up to 30 days for abuse prevention and debugging.
2. Why we use it
- To provide and operate the reading and translation service.
- To bill you for and manage your subscription.
- To respond to support requests and contact-form messages.
- To protect the service against abuse, spam, and fraud.
We do not sell your personal data and we do not use it for advertising.
3. Who we share data with
We share the minimum necessary personal data with the following processors so that the service can run:
- Clerk — authentication and account management.
- Lemon Squeezy — subscription payments and invoicing.
- Cloudflare R2 — object storage for book content and exports.
- Render — hosting for the API backend.
- Netlify — hosting and form handling for the website.
- Anthropic — AI sentence explanations and document translations are generated by Claude. Text you read on the site is not sent to Anthropic; only documents you choose to translate and snippets sent for sentence explanations are.
We will also disclose data when required by law (for example, in response to a valid court order).
4. Cookies
We use a small number of strictly-necessary cookies, set by Clerk, to keep you signed in. We do not use advertising or analytics cookies that track you across the web.
5. Data retention
We keep account and subscription data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we erase the data within 30 days, except where we are required to keep it for tax or legal reasons (typically up to 7 years for billing records).
6. Your rights
If you are in the UK or the EU, you have the right to access, correct, port, or erase your personal data, and to object to or restrict our processing of it. You can exercise most of these rights from your account page; for anything else, write to us via the contact form. You can also lodge a complaint with the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
7. Children
The service is not directed at children under 13. If you believe a child has signed up, let us know and we will delete the account.
8. Changes
If we update this policy in a way that affects your data, we will post the new version here and update the date at the top.
