On aperçut enfin les côtes de France. At length they sighted the coast of France.
« Avez-vous jamais été en France, monsieur Martin ? dit Candide. “Pray, Mr. Martin,” said Candide, “have you ever been in France?”
— Oui, dit Martin, j’ai parcouru plusieurs provinces. “Yes, Sir,” said Martin, “I have been in several provinces of that kingdom. Il y en a où la moitié des habitants est folle, quelques-unes où l’on est trop rusé, d’autres où l’on est communément assez doux et assez bête, d’autres où l’on fait le bel esprit ; et, dans toutes, la principale occupation est l’amour ; la seconde, de médire ; et la troisième, de dire des sottises. In some, one half of the people are madmen; in some, they are too artful; in others, again, they are in general either very good-natured or very brutal; while in others, they affect to be witty, and in all, their ruling passion is love, the next is slander, and the last is to talk nonsense.”
