Il était sept heures de l’après-midi. Le prince se disposait à aller au parc quand, tout à coup, il vit paraître sur sa terrasse Élisabeth Prokofievna. IT was seven in the evening, and the prince was just preparing to go out for a walk in the park, when suddenly Mrs. Epanchin appeared on the terrace.
Elle était seule. — Premièrement, ne t’avise pas de croire, commença-t-elle, — que je sois venue pour te demander pardon. "In the first place, don't dare to suppose," she began, "that I am going to apologize. C'est toi qui as eu tort. You were entirely to blame."
Le prince resta silencieux. The prince remained silent.
— Es-tu coupable, oui ou non ? — Autant que vous. "Were you to blame, or not?"
